I am Andi Malone. I attend Clovis High School in New Mexico. I was accepted as a Student Ambassador for People to People. As an ambassador I will travel with a group of students to England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales this summer. This experience will allow me to create friendships and develop contacts with people here and abroad. People to People was created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. What they do is create opportunities for students to learn about different cultures by having the participants interact with the many people from that country. Education has been an important part of my life. I have been involved in academic programs as well as extra curricular programs with the desire to be a well rounded student and contributing member of my community. In the 7th grade I was the manager of the basketball team and I was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. In the 8th grade I won an award for best 8th grade woodwind. I was also involved with National Junior Honor Society, Varsity Band, and Honors English. In the spring of my 9th grade year a tornado hit Clovis. I set up a one week daycare for children while their parents were looking for a new place to stay. I also helped feed families. This was the first year our church became involved with a program called Souper Bowl of Caring. That year we delivered over 600 pounds of food to the Matt 25 Hope Center. Also during my 9th grade year I continued to be active in the Honors program in English and the National Junior Honors Society. I continued with accomplishments in band making the All-District Band and Varsity Band. Again in 10th grade I continued with an emphasis on my education. I was inducted into the National Honor Society and continued with Honors programs in English and history. I also began college classes. I became active in Mock Trial, traveling to Albuquerque to learn how to create a team and compete, bringing that information back to the school to assist with the Mock Trial club at Clovis High School. I became a member of Key Club, which is part of Kiwanis. I continued with band learning new instruments. I was a reporter for the Purple Press, the high school newspaper. I was selected as Managing Editor toward the end of that year. With a strong desire to be a journalist, specifically a global reporter, the paper is very important to me. This year is my 11th grade year and has offered me many learning and growing opportunities. I have again continued with advanced education and by the end of this school year will complete 18 credit hours of college classes with an emphasis on math and science. I also continue to be active with National Honor Society and broadening community involvement with this group by volunteering to help create a Mock Trial team in one of our Middle Schools, and helping raise funds with the Kettle program sponsored by The Salvation Army. This year has been a very special band year. Our school was selected to be the Honor Band of New Mexico. I was selected All-State Symphonic Band, first chair, playing yet another new instrument, the contra-alto clarinet. I now have instruments that I play in the band, and I am learning the piano. Purple Press has been through many changes this year. With determination to move the paper forward, it is being published online. This has led to integrating new technology into the classroom. As managing editor, I am very proud of the direction of the paper as we go through the growing pains of change. The highlight of the year was being selected as a Student Ambassador for People to People. I look forward to an amazing opportunity to learn and grow from an exchange with my fellow student ambassadors and all the people that I will meet during my travel. I look forward to a great cultural exchange! |
